May 10, 1953, The Elloree, South Carolina, School Board vowed to make a wholesale purge of Black school teachers who would not disown NAACP membership affiliation
“One of my first major assignments for JET was this picture of twenty-one Elmore Training School teachers who quit their jobs rather than deny membership in the NAACP. The picture appeared in a feature section of JET called “This Week’s Best Pictures,” for which I was paid $15.
“Since JET was a weekly publication, submission deadlines required sending the film or pictures by “Airmail,” at that time the fastest method. JET always supplied prepaid mailing envelopes to their stringers along with a weekly newsletter that gave tips on new assignments.” – Cecil Williams
