RON’S BIG MISSION

Written by Rose Blue and Corinne Naden. Illustrated by Don Tate.

Ron’s Big Mission is a fictionalize account of a real event. It tells the story of nine-year-old Ron McNair, who loved to read books about flight and airplanes. Even though he could read as many books as he wanted to in the library, he was not allowed to check out books because he was an African-American in the segregated south. One day through Ron’s peaceful resistance, he won the right for all to obtain a library card at the Lake City Public Library in South Carolina.

Ron McNair went on to become an astronaut and a physicist. Unfortunately, he died during the launch of the Space Shuttle Challenger on January 28, 1986.
