Something Happened In Our Town: A Child’s Story about Racial Injustice

by Marianne Celano PhD, Marietta Collins PhD, and Ann Hazzard PhD, illustrated by Jennifer Zivoin

The story is about one Black family and one White family. Each family is presented with questions from their child about the shooting of a Black man by a police officer. Each family responds to their child with frank responses pointing out unfair practices and racial injustice – giving each child the lens to identify injustice and the courage to fight it.

Discussion questions:

How do you explain to your child that even though police are here to protect, Black people can’t count on them to do what’s right? Does your family speak about unfair practices taking place in BIPOC communities or in the world?
