CLAUDETTE COLVIN: Twice Toward Justice

By Phillip Hoose

Before Rosa Parks, there was fifteen-year-old Claudette Colvin who refused to give up her seat on March 2, 1955 to a white woman on a segregated bus in Montgomery, Alabama. As Claudette was dragged off the bus by police officers, she shouted “It’s my constitutional right!”

A year later she challenged segregation again by being one of the four plaintiffs in the landmark busing case Browder v. Gayle.
