Professor, Surgeon and Veteran of the Civil War

| By Dannie Gore |

The Seventh Regiment of Colored Troops was founded in Baltimore, Maryland on September 26, 1863.

They saw frequent action and suffered numerous casualties over the course of their service.

Attached to the Seventh was Major Alexander Thomas Augusta (1825 – 1890), the first black professor of medicine in the United States, the first black surgeon in the Union Army and the first black officer-ranked soldier to be buried at Arlington Cemetery. Despite his rank, he was only paid black-enlisted wages for most his duty.

This is much needed if we are to form relationships with others. None of us are superior to another. Unlike what the United States of America has been teaching itself by way of HIS STORY books written by him and denying all children to learn the truth about this nation and the brilliance of Black people. HIS STORY has and continues to divide this country, making many Whites feel they are superior to Blacks and creating policies and practicing behaviors that deny Blacks happiness, prosperity, excellent education and health systems. It is pass time that the truth rise to the top. Let’s create true knowledge, open our minds and the minds of all our children so together we can build a better world.
